The National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) has published the preliminary results of the general population census. According to the preliminary data, as of November 14, 2024, the population of Georgia amounted to 3,914 thousand people, of which 2,078 thousand (53 percent) are women, and 1,836 thousand (47 percent) are men. The share of women is relatively high in Tbilisi (56 percent) and Kutaisi (55 percent), and relatively low in Mtskheta, Kharagauli and Sagarejo municipalities (49 percent).
According to the census data, as of November 14, 2024, 2,423 thousand people (62 percent) live in urban settlements, and 1,491 thousand people (38 percent) - in rural settlements. The share of the population living in urban settlements, by regions (except Tbilisi) is high in the Adjara A.R. (66 percent), which is due to the high number of Batumi population, and is low in Mtskheta-Mtianeti (20 percent), Kakheti (21 percent) and Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti (24 percent) regions.
According to the census data, 34 percent of the country's population lives in Tbilisi. The second and third largest regions in terms of population are Imereti and Kvemo Kartli, with 12.9 and 11.2 percent of the population, respectively.
The 2024 Population and Agricultural Census of Georgia was conducted from November 14 to December 31, 2024. Census covered the entire territory of the country, except for the occupied territories.
According to the international methodology, all citizens of Georgia permanently residing in the country, as well as foreign citizens and stateless persons residing in the country, were subject to the census.
The reference time for population enumeration (the critical moment of the census) was midnight between November 13 and 14, according to which the facts were registered.
During the census, data were collected electronically, using modern technologies. The process was carried out in two stages: in the first stage (November 14-23, 2024), the self-enumeration method (computer-assisted web-interview - CAWI) was used, and in the second stage (November 29 - December 31) - the computer-assisted personal interview method (CAPI). Based on high demand from the population, data collection using CAWI method was additionally extended throughout December.
Considering that in some mountainous, hard-to-reach municipalities and/or settlements the conduct of fieldwork would be complicated during November-December due to possible deterioration of the weather and difficult meteorological condition, the population census was conducted in September 2024 (namely, in the municipalities of Mestia, Kazbegi, Lentekhi, partially Akhmeta (Omalo administrative unit) and Dusheti (Gudamakari, Magharoskari, Ukanapshavi, Kvesheti, Shatili and Khevsureti administrative units and villages included in the Pasanauri administrative unit)).
The publication of the census results is planned in two stages:
▶ Preliminary aggregated results will be available on June 25, 2025, which include the number of population by regions and municipalities, by sex and urban-rural settlements.
▶ Detailed (final) results of the census will be published in June 2026 (dwelling conditions, type of housing, year of dwelling construction, area and number of rooms, types of dwelling facilities; demographic and social characteristics of the population; citizenship and ethnicity, religion, level of education, marital status, internal migration and immigration, employment and economic activity, health problems; land area operated by holdings, structure of agricultural land, structure of land occupied by annual and permanent crops, number of fruit and citrus trees, number of vines, number of livestock, poultry and beehives).
