In the first quarter of 2026, the number of passengers carried by Georgian Railway decreased by 14% year-on-year, totaling 302,000 passengers, according to Geostat. For comparison, this is fewer passengers than the Tbilisi Metro transports in a single day.
Georgian Railway operates passenger services mainly to major cities and towns across the country. The government has announced plans to restore the Borjomi–Bakuriani line, resume services to Akhaltsikhe, modernize rolling stock, and purchase 10 new passenger trains. A Tbilisi–Baku daily service is also expected to resume after a six-year suspension starting May 26.
Freight transport remained largely stable during the same period, with total cargo turnover reaching 3 million tons, marking a marginal 0.03% decrease compared to the previous year.
