On June 24, the ruling Georgian Dream parliamentary majority formally elected Giorgi Gvarakidze as the new Prosecutor General of Georgia. Gvarakidze had been serving as First Deputy Prosecutor General and was acting in the top role since June 4, following the resignation of former Prosecutor General Giorgi Gabitashvili.

Gvarakidze began his career in the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia in 2003 as a trainee prosecutor. Over the past two decades, he has held numerous senior roles, including:

  • Chief Investigator in the Western Georgia Regional Prosecutor’s Office
  • Deputy Prosecutor and Head of Investigation in Adjara
  • District Deputy Prosecutor of Kutaisi
  • Prosecutor of Tbilisi
  • Deputy Head of both the Special Cases Investigation Department and the Special Investigation Service

His appointment follows his recent presentation to Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, where he emphasized anti-corruption, cybercrime, and transparency as key priorities.
