GNERC Chairman Davit Narmania says a preliminary investigation found that the nationwide power outage on July 25 was linked to a fault on the high-voltage “Imereti” transmission line.
As the line is owned by state company Sakrusenergo, the regulator plans to hear the company’s representatives at its next meeting.
Narmania said the initial assessment showed that the failure on the “Imereti” line spread across the energy system, while the system’s protection mechanisms did not operate properly. GNERC is still collecting and analyzing information before issuing a final conclusion.
The regulator is also examining the role of Enguri HPP, as its preliminary findings indicate that improper frequency and voltage regulation by the plant’s units may have contributed to instability in the grid during the July incidents. A technical team from abroad that originally installed the protection systems has been invited to assess the situation.
Sakrusenergo will provide GNERC with additional information on the operation of the “Imereti” line at the upcoming commission meeting.
