The Georgian government has announced the forgiveness of fines totaling GEL 1 billion for companies operating in the energy sector, with a clear warning: any future violations of deadlines will result in the reinstatement of the forgiven fines. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized that the state will remain strict regarding new unfulfilled obligations and accumulated budget debts.

According to Maia Melikidze, Executive Director of the Georgian Renewable Energy Development Association (GREDA), the write-off applies to 140 energy projects with a combined installed capacity of 1,150 megawatts. She noted that around 75% of these projects are hydroelectric, 20% wind, and 5% solar, highlighting the significant scale of the initiative relative to Georgia’s total installed capacity of 4,600 megawatts.

Melikidze described the government’s decision as welcome for the private sector, giving financially challenged projects a second chance to stabilize operations. The measure is expected to ease the financial burden on operators and support continued investment in renewable energy infrastructure.

The government stressed that to prevent irresponsible practices, companies will remain fully liable for any newly accumulated fines, and forgiven penalties will be reinstated if the renewed deadlines are not met. This ensures accountability while providing relief for past infractions.
