According to a government performance report covering June 2025–May 2026, preparatory and research works are ongoing for the construction of a new international airport in Tbilisi at the former Vaziani military airfield.

The document states that feasibility and design studies for the project are currently underway.

It also notes that expansion works are continuing at Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli International Airport, including terminal enlargement, construction of a new aircraft parking apron, and additional parking facilities. As a result, the airport’s capacity is expected to increase from 5 million to 10 million passengers annually.

The report adds that construction of a new 3.5 km runway and related airfield infrastructure at Kutaisi Davit the Builder International Airport is in an active phase. At the same time, optimization of the Telavi airport project is in its final stage, after which procurement for construction works will begin. The design of a new terminal at Mestia airport has also been completed.

On aviation performance, the report highlights continued growth in passenger and flight numbers despite disruptions in air traffic in the Middle East and Gulf regions. In January–March 2026, Georgian airports served 1.61 million passengers, up 4.28% year-on-year, while 7,799 flights were operated, an 8.7% increase.

During the same period, two new airlines entered the Georgian market—Norwegian Air Sweden and China Eastern Airlines. Additionally, Romanian carrier DAN AIR has applied to begin scheduled Bucharest–Tbilisi flights starting July 1.
