The Georgian government has supported the first national strategy for the protection of consumer rights. The document aims to strengthen the legislative and institutional framework for consumer protection, as well as improve coordination among consumer protection authorities. The four-year strategy includes proposals for legal, institutional, and practical enhancements, promoting consumer and business awareness, improving collaboration with international and local organizations, and other important measures to address challenges in the sector.
The strategy reflects the international experience gained in the field of consumer protection. Among them, the new agenda for the protection of consumer rights, the recommendations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the reports of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Also, the latest legislation of the European Union in the direction of consumer protection and the goals adopted at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in 2015 (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs) - the World Development "Agenda" for 2015-2030.
The Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency, in collaboration with sector regulatory bodies - National Bank of Georgia, the National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission of Georgia, the Communications Commission, the National Food Agency and the State Insurance Supervision Service of Georgia, has prepared the first national strategy document for the protection of consumer rights. The strategy was developed with the assistance of international experts involved in the EU-funded TWINNING project, representatives from public bodies, non-governmental organizations, business associations, and other interested parties.
