The Chairman of the Committee on Sectoral Economics and Economic Policy declares, that the government, the majority and the private sector are actively working to find a solution to reduce the fuel price.

Davit Songhulashvili has named several factors of rising fuel prices in the country at the plenary sitting of the Parliament and noted that the price rise is due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

"Georgia is an importer of fuel, therefore it completely depends on the situation on the world market. Price surge on the fuel is due to the Russian- Ukraine War and the global geopolitical crisis. Given all the increased risks since the start of the war, prices are rising, especially for oil products. Naturally, this tendency is reflected in Georgia as an open economy country.

Political forces are trying to use this case for their own interest, but I think we should focus on the solution and not on the severity of the problem. This problem has not really been found by the opposition. The government, the majority and the private sector are actively working on this issue to find a solution together," - said David Songhulashvili.

Davit Kirkitadze, a member of the United National Movement - United Opposition Strength in Unity declared, that during the rule of the "National Movement", a barrel of oil cost USD 140 and the fuel price in Georgia did not exceed GEL 2. Today, a barrel of oil costs USD 30 less (USD 110) and fuel totals to GEL 4.

According to him, fuel price increase made everything more expensive and the situation even worse for the population.

"Fuel costs GEL 4 because of you. Due to the bad economic policy, GEL has depreciated twice and, consequently, prices have increased. Yes, in 2017 you doubled the excise tax on fuel, which led to higher prices”, - Kirkitadze said
