The government will take responsibility for overseeing the sale of psychotropic drugs from October 1, the Health Ministry has announced.

Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze met with representatives of clinics and pharmacies to acquaint them with the amended procedures, emphasising that these changes aim to reduce the risk of irrational use of psychotropic medications.

This change will benefit the population, as the government has no commercial interests in this sector. In terms of wholesale distribution, it will help stabilise medicine prices. The Minister also urged pharmacists to keep this principle in mind during retail sales,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry clarified that the Centre for Mental Health and Drug Addiction Prevention, a legal entity operating under the Health Ministry, has been designated the authority to import and sell psychotropic drugs.
