The most powerful of the hydropower plants to be commissioned in Georgia in 2024 is the medium-sized "Khobi 2 HPP", with an installed capacity of 44.5 megawatts. As the Ministry of Economy of Georgia told BMG, there are a total of eight hydropower plants in the final stage of work, with a total capacity of approximately 90 megawatts.
"Construction works are in the final stage at 8 hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 94 MW, the construction of 4 facilities has been completed and put into operation. The installed capacity of these four hydropower plants is:
Toloshi HPP - 1.5 MW;
Khobi 2 HPP - 44.5 MW;
Shevaburi HPP - 1.94 MW;
Dageti HPP - 0.81 MW.
At this stage, up to 300 energy projects are at various stages of development," the ministry said.
Currently, the capacity of the Georgian energy system amounts to 4,621 MW, of which 3,520 MW are hydropower plants, including both large regulating HPPs and run-of-river hydroelectric power plants. The only wind power plant included in the system is only 21 MW. More than 70% of generation comes from hydropower, 25% from thermal power, and the share of wind power in generation is insignificant. The government says that by 2034, installed capacity will exceed 10,000 megawatts, or double.
