Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Monday announced the Government would spend GEL 85 million on upgrading the infrastructure at the Kutaisi International Airport.

Davitashvili said the Airport “needs to not only be perfect for passenger transportation but also fully realise its potential”, noting the existing runway had “numerous issues and can not be repaired”.

"The renovated Airport will mean that we will have the opportunity to receive all types of aircraft, both passenger and cargo”, he said.

According to him, the project for the new 3.5-kilometre runway was underway and added construction should take 18 months to complete.

Kutaisi Airport recorded its record-high passenger flow in the past seven months of the current year, with an 90 percent increase compared to the same month of the pre-pandemic 2019 and a 74% increase in the number of flights.

The number of flights from the Airport has also increased by 94%, reaching its maximum compared to the July of 2019.
