Georgia's fifth president, Salome Zourabichvili declares, that she will attend the inauguration of the elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, and simultaneously hold high-level meetings in Washington, D.C.
As Zourabichvili stated during her first press conference after leaving the Orbeliani Palace, she will attend Donald Trump’s inauguration at the invitation of Congressman Joe Wilson, Chair of the Helsinki Commission.
"We have the means to break out of isolation. I have a role, and I am fulfilling it completely. I maintain practically daily contacts with our foreign partners. I confirm that I will attend President Trump’s inauguration and will be in Washington at Joe Wilson’s invitation. There are different ways to be invited to the inauguration, none of which involve paying money. If that were the case, others have far more resources than I do to pay such expenses. Let’s leave the jokes aside. The main point is that I am going and will hold high-level meetings. We continue to build relationships with our partners," said Salome Zourabichvili.
She also commented on the statements made by Georgia's ruling party, Georgian Dream, directed at French President Emmanuel Macron and other Western leaders, describing the party's remarks as "rude and offensive."
"You are aware of President Macron's statement. The rude and offensive responses from the ruling team toward our partners mean very little because, in reality, what matters is that the Georgian people have the support of key partners. These partners are ready to impose sanctions on those who have decided to lead Georgia down an anti-democratic and anti-Western path. At the same time, they promise the Georgian people that as soon as new elections are held and we return to a system that is most desirable for Georgia, the assistance that existed—and which should be further strengthened—will be reinstated. This is crucial because our economy is in a very dire state. After the elections, we will need serious new efforts, primarily on our part, but also in terms of support from our partners," said Salome Zourabichvili.
