At a court hearing reviewing his detention, former Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Romeo Mikautadze stated that he and his family are fully cooperating with the investigation and have no intention of fleeing the country.
“I am Georgian, I was born here, and I plan to remain here even a hundred years from now,” Mikautadze told the judge. He emphasized that all members of his family have complied with the investigation, including appearing for questioning and abiding by the request not to leave the country.
During his statement, Mikautadze expressed gratitude toward law enforcement agencies, his family, and supporters. He noted his 25-year career in academia and public service, highlighting his contributions and receipt of the Order of Honor.
He addressed the charges, which allege he abused his official position to gain especially large financial benefits, illegally legalizing over 2.5 million GEL with the help of accomplices. Mikautadze rejected any flight risk, stating he would accept an electronic bracelet as an alternative to detention if necessary.
The former official was arrested on June 20 and charged under Articles 332 and 194 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.
