I appeal to officials to publicly express your position - Nika Gilauri

ნიკა გილაური

Former Prime Minister of Georgia Nika Gilauri calls on public officials to clearly state their position. Nika Gilauri notes that the US will not change its position towards the Georgian Dream, especially when Georgia signs an agreement with a US-sanctioned Chinese company for the strategically important Anaklia Port project.

"Georgian Dream members are assuring each other that Trump will come and everything will be fine. The Georgian Dream is waiting for Trump's inauguration to renew relations with the new administration. In response to these statements, the day before yesterday, Congressman Joe Wilson (who is one of President Trump's main allies in Congress and the future chairman of the Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee) wrote a post - "Donald Trump supports freedom. He supports democracy," "I believe Donald Trump will stand by the Georgian people and not with the regime that rigged the elections." Believe me, this statement reflects the spirit of the new administration team, otherwise such statements would not be made at the level of congressmen. President Trump does not need a "fake" Prime Minister and a "fake" government in Georgia. Congressman Joe Wilson's yesterday statement is even more specific and harsh - "The State Department should begin by announcing personal sanctions against the mayor of Tbilisi, the Minister of Internal Affairs, and all other officials responsible for organizing these crackdowns."

The MEGOBARI Act, initiated by Congressman Wilson, is currently being voted on in Congress, which has bipartisan support, and if approved, this act will create a new legal framework, as a result of which we should expect financial sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili and members of his illegitimate government.

Also, yesterday, the State Department issued a statement in which it “condemns the Georgian Dream’s brutal and unjustified violence against Georgian citizens, protesters, members of the media, and opposition representatives.” It is noteworthy that this statement does not mention the Georgian government, but “Georgian Dream,” which once again emphasizes the illegitimate status of the Georgian government for the American state. The State Department’s statement concludes with the following sentence - “The United States is now preparing to use the tools at its disposal, including additional sanctions.” Believe me - such statements are not made during the transition period without agreement with the incoming administration.

GD supporters don't fool yourself, if you think that the main thing is to reach January 20 and then everything will be fine. Don't ruin the country and your own future with this hope. There will be no reset with the type of autocracy that is in Georgia today, which is similar to the autocracies of Venezuela, Russia, China and Iran.

Two weeks ago I was in Washington and met with several very influential people from the entourage of President Trump and the future Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. They were the ones who compared Georgia to Venezuela - with only two differences - the system there is based on the military and with you on the police, they have oil and you don't. Venezuelan-style elections and autocracy, the Anaklia port project taken away from an American company and transferred to a Chinese consortium, the company sanctioned by the US.

I appeal to the members of the current Georgian Dream and government structures who still have a chance to break away from this system and not become accomplices of the collective traitorous regime:

• Publicly state your position, express your protest;
• Join us on Rustaveli;
• Hang the flags of the European Union and Georgia from the windows of ministries and state institutions as a sign of protest;
• If you believe that you are being asked to perform illegal or treasonous tasks for the country, write statements and leave your jobs, announcing this publicly.

You know that the complete moral superiority today is on the side of the protesters. You are also Georgians and you understand that Georgia is not Belarus and will not succumb to the pressure of the illegitimate government. The more raids and arrests there are, the more the protest will grow. Such perseverance has brought our country to where it is today, and with this moral superiority and standing on the right side of history, we will win today too!" Nika Gilauri wrote on social media.
