I Would Like To Point Out That Georgian-US Relations Need To Be Restarted - PM

კობახიძე

I would like to point out that Georgian-US relations need to be restarted, need to be improved. We will do everything for this, of course, the main thing is to see the next steps, - Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

He also drew attention to the importance of cooperation with the US in the field of defense and noted that if the official Washington is going to reduce things in this direction, it will equally harm the interests of Georgia and the US.

"When it comes to the language of blackmail, it's certainly not good, it doesn't help to improve relations. Therefore, I hope that everyone will properly understand the importance of resetting and healing relationships.

I remember one of the conferences was held, I don't remember exactly what year it was, probably 2018-2019, this conference was about the prospect of providing foreign aid with reservations, and the ambassador at that time, Ian Kelly, made such a statement that in the case of the US, reservations did not have much weight anyway , due to the fact that the US aid was essentially provided by NGOs. You can draw your own conclusions from this, when it comes to funding NGOs, I wouldn't really call it aid.

As for defense, it is important for us to continue cooperation with the American side in the field of defense, and even deepen it. Here I will say one thing clearly - the continuation of cooperation in the field of defense is equally important for both the Georgian side and the American side. Therefore, I do not know if they are going to reduce anything in this regard, but it will be equally harmful to the interests of our country and the American side. Therefore, I think that everyone should act pragmatically, this is my appeal to everyone. It is our interest and desire to improve Georgian-US relations”, the PM said.

According to Kobakhidze, he hopes that the Ambassador of the United States of America, Robin Dunigan, will make her contribution to the process of recovery.

"Once again, I would like to express my respect to the ambassador. Unlike the previous ambassador and the previous ambassadors, the current ambassador has been constructive and positive during all these months, and I would like to express my hope that she will personally contribute to the improvement of Georgian-US relations. We are ready in every possible way for this, the main thing is to see appropriate and healthy countermeasures", said Kobakhidze.
