Internally displaced persons (IDP) families that have not previously received state housing assistance will be eligible for compensation of GEL 10,000 per family member, including those who already own a home and no longer face housing difficulties, Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze has announced.
Applications are expected to open in the coming days. Sarjveladze said the entire family must apply collectively and must not have previously received state assistance for housing. The compensation will be offered as an alternative to waiting for an apartment or participating in the “Rural House” program.
The minister said the state currently allocates GEL 250 million for IDP resettlement, compared with a total budget of GEL 25 million for the former IDP ministry before 2012. Ongoing housing projects are expected to provide apartments to approximately 2,700 additional families.
According to Sarjveladze, more than 45,000 IDP families have received housing assistance since 2012, compared with 19,000 before October 1, 2012. Current construction projects include housing developments in Tbilisi, Zugdidi, Borjomi, Rustavi and Kutaisi.
