Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze reaffirmed the country’s pro-Western vision, stating that Georgia’s strategic goal is to become a full member of the European Union. He made the remarks in an interview with TRT World.
When asked whether Georgia would need to choose between closer ties with the EU, Russia, China, or the US, Kobakhidze said no special choice is required. “We have a pro-Western vision, and our goal is EU membership. This is a clear and strategic objective,” he noted.
Kobakhidze emphasized that Georgia can also serve the EU’s interests by helping expand economic cooperation with Eastern markets. He highlighted that the EU’s share in the global economy has dropped from 30% in 2008 to 17.5% today, and access to the Russian market and cheap resources has been lost since 2021, making alternative economic partnerships crucial.
“The EU can benefit from Georgia’s membership just as much as Georgia can,” the Prime Minister said, expressing hope that pragmatic decisions regarding EU integration will finally be made.
