Kobakhidze: Georgia moving to “comprehensive strategic partnership” with China

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze says Georgia is entering a new phase in its relations with China, describing it as a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” Speaking on the anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, he noted that the existing strategic partnership agreement signed in 2023 has already significantly deepened political and economic relations.

Kobakhidze pointed to concrete outcomes over the past three years, including visa-free travel, the launch of direct flights, and the expansion of air connectivity. He said these developments have increased mobility and strengthened trade and economic cooperation, arguing that the previous framework had already produced tangible results for bilateral relations.

He added that the upgraded partnership status would further expand cooperation across multiple sectors and bring additional benefits for both countries. According to him, the move reflects a natural progression in relations and is expected to deepen engagement in trade, infrastructure, and people-to-people contacts.

In the same remarks, Kobakhidze also commented on U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson, calling him “not serious,” after a U.S. House bill advanced requiring scrutiny of Russian and Chinese intelligence activity in Georgia. He contrasted Wilson’s position with broader U.S.–China engagement, arguing that such claims about negative influence in the region lack credibility.
