Malkhaz Kunelauri, founder of MK Development Group, has criticized Georgia’s approach to fighting corruption, calling it inconsistent and politically motivated. Speaking on TV-program “Business Morning”, Kunelauri argued that the country applies different standards to different individuals, punishing some while excusing others.
“The fact that they claim to fight corruption is a different game,” Kunelauri said. “For some, business in a political position is acceptable, while for others it is treated as a crime. If there is a standard, it should apply to everyone.” He emphasized that releasing individuals on bail for embezzling millions, while others face imprisonment for minor offenses, is unjust.
Kunelauri contrasted Georgia’s governance with Western and Russian models, describing current practices as a hybrid that lacks clarity and transparency. He stressed that an effective anti-corruption system must be uniform and based on responsibility, order, and transparency.
The remarks come amid growing corruption investigations in Georgia. Former Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Koba Gabunia was recently charged with abuse of official authority, while Davit Tabidze, former executive director of the Municipal Development Fund, was previously arrested and released on bail. Minister of Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze noted that 161 out of 214 infrastructure projects, totaling over 1 billion GEL, faced issues, highlighting systemic management problems.
