Lasha Khutsishvili: Change to the 6+ Year-Old Vehicle Policy Follows Broad Consultations

Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili says the government’s revised decision regarding vehicles older than six years is the result of broad consultations, including with the business sector, and aims to balance economic and environmental interests.

According to him, instead of banning registration, the government will introduce a unified excise rate for such vehicles.

“Regarding the restriction on registering vehicles older than six years, the government’s decision has been revised. The ban that was set to take effect on April 1 will no longer be implemented.

Instead, a differentiated unified excise rate of 4.5 GEL per cubic centimeter will apply to these vehicles.

This decision was made after extensive consultations, including with the business community, to ensure that business interests are protected while also safeguarding environmental oversight and the ecological well-being of Georgia’s population,” Khutsishvili said.

The government reversed its initial plan to prohibit the import of vehicles older than six years. Currently, engines of such cars are taxed at 0.8 GEL per cubic centimeter, but the new rule increases the rate to 4.5 GEL, a 5.6-fold hike.
