The Georgian government should adopt a more liberal approach toward the LPG sector and introduce relief measures amid high fuel prices, according to Zaal Iakobidze, Director of Senta Petroleum. He told BMG that such measures would help ease price pressure in the petroleum products market.
Iakobidze said regulations and restrictions imposed on LPG stations by Tbilisi City Hall’s Municipal Inspection remain a major challenge. Despite communication with the municipality and lawsuits filed by some companies, he said the authorities have not changed their position, resulting in fines and the closure of some businesses.
LPG currently costs around GEL 1.70 per liter, while prices exceed GEL 2 at some stations. Further increases are expected as prices in Russia, Georgia’s main LPG supplier, have doubled. However, importers say there is currently no immediate risk of supply disruptions or shortages.
Several dozen of the roughly 200 LPG stations operating in Tbilisi have reportedly suspended operations, while more than 100 businesses face fines. The restrictions concern the placement or sale of used tires, scrap metal, end-of-life vehicles and parts, and flammable or explosive materials. Violations of the rules, which took effect on January 1, 2026, carry fines of GEL 2,500–5,000.
