Mariam Kvrivishvili Travels to Greece - What Do Georgia–Greece Economic Ties Look Like?

Georgia’s Economy and Sustainable Development Minister, Mariam Kvrivishvili, has traveled to Greece with a delegation to participate in a major regional energy summit. The event brings together over 270 high-level officials and business leaders from Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, including Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Israel’s President Isaac Herzog, GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi, and senior EU and industry representatives. Deputy Ministers Inga Phkhaladze and Tamar Ioseliani accompany Kvrivishvili.

Remittances: Greece Among Georgia’s Top Sources
Greece is one of Georgia’s leading remittance partners. In 2025, transfers from Greece accounted for 8% of all remittances, reaching a record $293.8 million, up from $263.4 million in 2024. In the first quarter of 2026, $73 million was sent to Georgia from Greece - a $10 million year-over-year increase.

Trade: Georgia Buys Much More Than It Sells
The countries reached a peak bilateral trade turnover of $131.3 million in 2014. After fluctuations, trade reached $98 million in 2024 and slightly declined to $96.1 million in 2025.
In January–March 2026, trade amounted to $43 million (imports: $34M; exports: $9.1M).

Georgia’s imports from Greece significantly exceed exports. In 2025, Georgia imported $67.3M worth of goods while exporting only $28.8M.

Pharmaceuticals – $9M
Printed materials – $4.9M
Dairy products (yogurt, kefir) – $3M
Paints and varnishes – $2.3M

Ferroalloys – $14.4M
Hazelnuts and nuts – $4.2M
Plywood and wood panels – $4.1M
Oil and petroleum products – $634K
Fruit and vegetable juices – $630K

Investments: Very Limited Greek Capital in Georgia
Greek investment in Georgia is minimal. The highest inflow was recorded in 2002 at $19.4M. In recent years, FDI has remained low — $2.1M in 2025 and $4M in 2024.

Tourism: Growing Visitor Numbers
Tourism between the two countries is increasing. In 2025, visitors from Greece reached a record 35,322, up from 27,557 in 2024. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, 7,089 Greek citizens visited Georgia.
