Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze says the Migration Department has been tasked with removing at least 4,000 undocumented foreign nationals from Georgia by the end of the year. He made the announcement during a parliamentary committee hearing, linking the target to recently adopted legislative changes.
According to Darakhvelidze, strengthened migration enforcement has already increased deportation figures, with 1,311 individuals expelled last year and over 1,900 removed so far this year. He said the new legal framework has helped curb abuse of asylum and residence procedures.
He added that tighter migration rules are also intended to support investment and tourism while closing loopholes that previously allowed extended illegal stays in the country.
From July 1, further amendments will take effect, including stricter rules for foreign students, tighter controls on residence permits through marriage, and new verification procedures involving interagency commissions. Some administrative decisions will also become subject only to limited court appeal, with deportation procedures continuing regardless of litigation.
