Minister: University Tuition Costs “No Longer Relevant” Under Full State-Funding Reform

Education Minister Givi Mikanadze told Parliament that the exact cost of university tuition is no longer relevant for applicants, as the state will fully cover tuition fees at public universities under the new reform. He made the remarks during an interpellation session while responding to opposition questions regarding the absence of pricing details in the national student information guide.

According to the minister, the guide is intended solely as an informational tool for applicants, outlining exam procedures, registration steps, program selection rules, and admission processes. He argued that it was not designed to include evaluation methodologies or financial calculations, such as per-student funding costs.

Mikanadze also avoided answering questions about how much the new reform would cost the state budget per student annually. He reiterated that since tuition at public universities will be fully covered by the government, pricing information is no longer necessary for students. However, he noted that tuition fees at private universities will still be published as before.

The minister also addressed criticism over the shift in registration timelines from March to April, stating that the change had no negative impact on students. He emphasized that neither registration nor exam periods were shortened, and applicants still had sufficient time to prepare and complete the process.
