The first train carrying goods from Turkey to China has begun operating on the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway. It departed Turkey to China on December 4 and entered Georgia on December 8.

The train will follow the Trans Caspian East-West Middle Corridor via Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, covering 8.693 kms, passing two continents, two seas, five countries and forwarding its freight to China in 12 days.

Minister of economy Natia Turnava, this corridor will increase the possibility of exporting products from Georgia to China, especially wine.

“This means that the railway corridor hosts a growing number of cargoes, which is very important for the development of our country's transit function, as well as we have a very good opportunity to grow Georgian exports to the Chinese markets. China is our number one export partner, quite a lot of Georgian wine is going to China. We will have a good market by improving these logistics," - said Natia Turnava.

As of January-October 2020, the number of containers transported from China (to China) via the corridor amounted to 2,343 TEU containers, which is 35.1% more comparing to the same period of 2019 (1734 TEU). Including, 1260 TEU were transported by BTK in January-October 2020, which is 371.9% more comparing to the same period of 2019 (267 TEU).
