The ruling Georgian Dream party has introduced a legislative initiative to abolish the National Security Council, transferring its responsibilities directly to the government. The initiative has been officially submitted to parliament, according to a statement from the government administration.

If approved, the National Security Council will cease to exist as of September 1, 2025, with its powers fully assumed by the executive branch. The proposed changes would amend the current Law on the Rules of Planning and Coordination of National Security Policy.

The administration stated that the reform is aligned with Georgia’s parliamentary system of governance and is intended to enhance the executive-level management of national security affairs.

Following the Council’s dissolution, a liquidation commission will be formed to oversee the dismantling of the Council’s apparatus. The Georgian government will determine the composition and operational rules of this commission.

Additionally, all assets of the National Security Council, including the authority to operate the National Situation Room, will be transferred to the appropriate government agencies via the liquidation commission.
