Davit Narmania, Chairman of GNERC, stated that, to his knowledge, the Georgian government has not yet made a final decision regarding the full launch of the Georgian Energy Exchange.

Speaking about the exchange’s progress, Narmania highlighted the financial benefits realized so far.

“The preparatory work for the energy exchange was carried out quite well. The exchange has been operating in a voluntary mode for the past year. Over the last six months, companies trading there have saved more than 400,000 GEL compared to prices outside the exchange. This shows that the exchange is both financially attractive and beneficial.”

He noted that the government will ultimately decide whether to fully open the exchange or postpone the launch.

“According to the information I have, no decision has been made yet. Let’s wait and see what the government decides,” Narmania said.

The Georgian Energy Exchange currently operates under a transitional model until July 1, 2025. Under this model, trading is conducted in hourly products, while balancing electricity is reported on a monthly basis.

Starting July 1, the exchange is expected to fully implement trading in hourly products on the day-ahead and intraday markets. In addition, the balancing and ancillary services market will be launched, alongside an obligation for hourly balancing, as part of the target operational model.
