Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze says there are currently no grounds to believe that the rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue will be completed later than scheduled, despite the discovery of archaeological artifacts during the works.
According to Kaladze, construction has been suspended on one specific section where the artifacts were found, but work is progressing rapidly in other areas. He said the city currently sees no need to extend the project deadline or move the completion date.
A medieval ceramics workshop and fragments of ceramic products, reportedly dating to the 10th–12th centuries, were discovered near the Palace of Students and Youth during the ongoing rehabilitation. Kaladze said the archaeological work is being carried out alongside construction, while other sections of the project continue.
The rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2026. Works began at midnight on July 23, with all motor vehicle traffic fully restricted on the avenue and part of Merab Kostava Street.
