Number of deaths was 8% up in Georgia in 2020

In 2020, the number of deaths increased by 8.3% in annual terms and totaled 50,500 persons, - Geostat reports.

The main factor of mortality increase was the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus has killed a total of 3773 citizens since February 2020 (as of March 30, 2021).

According to the 2020 data, the negative natural increase was stated in Georgia (the difference between the number of live births and the number of deaths) equaling -4,000.

Tbilisi - 13,878 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 1,329;
Adjara AR - 4,253 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 883;
Guria - 1,774 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 25;
Imereti - 8,589 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 581;
Kakheti - 4,544 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 24;
Mtskheta-Mtianeti - 1,409 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 98;
Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti - 764 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 78;
Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti - 4,946 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 72;
Samtskhe-Javakheti - 2,055 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 110;
Kvemo Kartli - 4,892 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 - 520;
Shida Kartli - 3,433 deaths; mortality increase compared to 2019 – 158.
