Georgia’s energy sector representatives plan to meet with the Ministry of Economy to discuss restrictions on electricity generation. Maia Melikidze, executive director of the Georgian Renewable Energy Development Association (GREDA), said curtailments imposed between May and July this year caused significant financial losses for companies in the sector.

Melikidze said investors need clear advance information on when and how power plants’ output may be restricted in 2027. GREDA has shared details of the private sector’s losses with the ministry and is seeking further discussions with policymakers and energy officials.

She said the government and private sector should jointly develop an optimal model that balances electricity generation and consumption while protecting both state interests and private investment. The rules should be clear, predictable and stable from year to year to help investors assess risks and expected returns.

According to investment bank Galt & Taggart, electricity generation curtailments due to low demand between May and July totaled approximately 0.5 terawatt-hours (TWh). Melikidze warned that without a predictable framework, financial losses could also affect the technical sustainability of the sector and the reliability of electricity supplies.
