In five months of 2022, Georgian economic growth amounted to 11.2%. Giorgi Khishtovani, director of the PMC research center, believes that the current growth is not stable and it is mainly caused by external factors, which is why there are risks of the economy overheating in the country. Roman Gotsiridze, the former president of the National Bank, does not share a similar opinion, and he states that talking about the overheating of the economy is not serious.
"Overheating of the economy, even theoretically, is a very frivolous word. When there was high growth in China, they invented the word overheating. What is overheating when the problem is driving the economy in the country," says Gotsiridze.
Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili also excludes the risks of overheating the economy:
"The growth is caused by several factors including increased demand, which is reflected in economic growth. Economic growth is significantly affected by the increased rate of exports, which is higher than 35%, and also the rate of tourism. It has recovered more than planned. All these factors affect economic growth and 11.2% economic growth is caused by these factors. Therefore, in your question <are there risks of overheating of the economy?> such signs are not observed, because these directions that I have listed determine the economic growth that we have in Georgia", - says Lasha Khutsishvili .
According to the forecast of the Georgian government, this year the country's economy will grow by 6%, as a result of which the GDP will reach GEL 69 billion in the current prices.
