Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has commented on Mamuka Mdinaradze’s decision to leave politics, saying the move was regrettable but that he respects his former colleague’s choice.

Asked whether Mdinaradze’s decision was linked to the release of former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s letters, Papuashvili said it was difficult to assess the reasons from the outside. “It was never too early or too late. Decisions are made when they are made. There is no specific timing or right moment. A person makes a decision when they feel it has matured, and that cannot be judged from the outside,” he said.

Papuashvili added that Mdinaradze had publicly explained the reasons behind his decision and ruled out other speculation surrounding his departure. “I think he gave a very open and sincere briefing, and journalists had the opportunity to hear his explanation directly from him,” he said.

While describing the decision as personally and politically regrettable, Papuashvili said everyone has the right to determine their own path. “Of course, it is very regrettable for us and for me personally that he made this decision, but I respect his choice,” he said.
