The Parliament has overridden the President's veto regarding the changes in the procedure for electing the chairman and members of the Central Election Commission.

Initially, the draft law proposed by the President was voted on, which was supported by only 22 deputies. 33 members of the Parliament voted against.

After that, the draft law passed by the Parliament in three readings and vetoed by the President was put to the vote, which was approved by the ruling majority with 78 votes (14 against).

According to the changes, the election competition for the chairman and members of the CEC shall be announced and the competition commission shall be created by the chairman of the parliament, instead of the President. The participation of the President of Georgia in the process of presenting candidacies for the chairmanship of the CEC and the membership of the CEC is envisaged if the Parliament of Georgia is not able to elect persons to the vacant positions in the very first try.

The chairman and members of the CEC shall be elected for a term of 5 years by the majority of the full composition of the Parliament.
