I hereby kindly ask you to disregard our earlier request for the legal opinions and suspend your decision-making processes in this regard, - the Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili addresses the president of the Venice Commission, Claire Bazy Malaurie, with these words regarding the draft law “On Foreign Agents”. The letter sent by Papuashvili is published by the press office of the Parliament.

“Your Excellency,

I have recently conveyed you a letter asking for a legal opinion of the Venice Commission on two draft laws on transparency of foreign influence.

Unfortunately, the initiated regulations caused differences of opinion in Georgia’s society. False narratives and labeling misled citizens and reinforced confrontation.

Therefore, as a responsible actor careful about peace, stability and prosperity, the ruling party has made a decision to withdraw the support to the draft laws and stop their further legislative consideration. Parliamentary procedures will follow.

I hereby kindly ask you to disregard our earlier request for the legal opinions and suspend your decision-making processes in this regard.
Madam President, please accept the assurances of my highest consideration and esteem.

Sincerely,

Shalva Papuashvili”, - the letter reads.
