Georgia’s Parliament will establish a special commission on food price regulation at the start of the spring session, Speaker Shalva Papuashvili announced on Facebook. The move follows Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s statement that food prices in Georgia remain significantly higher than in European countries due to high markups by distributors and retail chains.

Kobakhidze has called for active engagement with distribution companies and markets, as well as a thorough investigation by law enforcement to identify any criminal elements. He also indicated that antitrust mechanisms may be applied if necessary and requested Parliament to create a commission to monitor the process.

Papuashvili emphasized that the commission will provide a transparent, public format to study retail pricing, enabling informed citizen participation in discussions and decision-making on the issue.
