The National Bank of Georgia published a report. According to the document, during 2022, the volume of payments made through POS terminals in Georgia increased by 49% and reached GEL 13.4 billion. In total, the transaction number amounted to 436 million, so the value of one average receipt was GEL 30.8.
The increase in POS-terminal payments was caused by several main factors - these are the wider adoption of terminals by the trade sector of Georgia; the increase in card payments, tourism recovery and the effect of Russian migrants.
Considering these circumstances, the volume of payments increased by almost 50%.
According to the statistics of the National Bank, the largest amount was paid through the terminals in December, which amounted to 1.46 billion GEL.
In total, 93,668 POS terminals are operating in the country, and the number of terminals is up by 14,000 compared to the previous year.
Banking operations stll occupy the leading place in the country despite the growth of payments by POS-terminals. In 2022, GEL 39.1 billion was withdrawn from ATMs, which was GEL 9.7 billion more than the previous year. On average, residents withdrew GEL 384 from the ATM last year.
As for e-commerce, the volume of payments amounted to GEL 6.46 billion, which was only 2% more than in 2021. The number of e-commerce payments amounted to 101 million units, which was 3 million more than in 2021.
