The government has to repay $ 500 million in 10-year Eurobonds in April 2021. The government has not yet decided how it will fulfill this obligation. In particular, the first alternative to debt service is to repay it in full, and the second alternative is to repay it and take on new debt or refinance in return.
Bm.ge asked whether the government has decided what it plans to do with the Eurobond. According to the Minister of Finance, Ivane Machavariani, the government thinks that it will refinance the Eurobond but does not lose hope that it may reconsider the decision by the end of the year and think about repayment.
"We will keep the options until the last moment. We will probably refinance. At first, we leaned towards repayment. However, in the face of an aggravated pandemic, we lean towards refinancing. We have time. Theoretically, we can reconsider the decision. This is not crucial at this point. In any case, we will make an effective decision regarding the Eurobond," Vano Machavariani said.
