Georgia’s dairy sector is preparing for new labeling requirements aimed at informing consumers about products made with plant-based fats. Starting in January 2027, these products will feature a special symbol placed in a clearly visible position on the label.

The new rules have sparked differing opinions among dairy producers. Some believe the symbol will help consumers make informed choices, emphasizing that products containing non-dairy fats are not necessarily unhealthy or inferior. Others warn that certain products may mislead consumers about their ingredients and potential health risks.

“Some products are made with questionable fats that mislead consumers. We all know that many diseases are directly linked to nutrition,” Nikoloz Beniaidze, founder of Shiraki, told BM.GE.

Meanwhile, the head of the Dairy Producers Association argues that products containing non-dairy fats should not automatically be considered harmful or inferior. He stresses that the new symbol should inform consumers rather than mislead them or create unnecessary negative perceptions of these products.
