Georgia’s European integration and current processes in the country were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and the delegation of the Foreign and European Union Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Italy.

At the meeting held in the Orbeliani Palace, Zourabichvili highlighted the “steadfast and persistent fight” of the Georgian people for the country’s European future and claimed the upcoming parliamentary elections would be “a real referendum between European and Russian Georgia, in which the European choice will win once again”.

The importance of close cooperation with international partners and the presence of observation missions in Georgia during the pre-election period was emphasised by the sides, the Presidential Administration said.

Zourabichvili stressed the significance of high-level visits amid the current processes in Georgia - the ongoing public protests against the controversial law on transparency of foreign influence, adopted by the Parliament last week on the backdrop of criticism from Georgia’s foreign partner states.

The Georgian President also briefed the visiting officials on her initiative of creating a ‘European Platform’ with domestic opposition parties - a platform, the creation of which had been announced by Zourabichvili in February, to unite political parties around the idea of Georgia’s European future.

The Italian parliamentary delegation thanked Zourabichvili for her efforts to advance Georgia on the European path.
