In August 2023 compared with July 2023, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector decreased by 1.1% in the euro area and by 0.7% the EU, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July 2023, production in construction grew by 1.0% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU.
In August 2023 compared with August 2022, production in construction decreased by 0.1% in the euro area and increased by 0.2% in the EU.
Monthly comparison by construction sector and by Member State
In the euro area in August 2023, compared with July 2023, civil engineering decreased by 2.1% and building construction by 0.7%.
In the EU, civil engineering decreased by 0.9% and building construction by 0.4%.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in production in construction were recorded in Belgium and Hungary (both -5.0%), Germany (-2.4%) and Austria (-1.8%). The highest increases were observed in Romania (+4.7%), Poland (+2.1%) and Czechia (+2.0%).
Annual comparison by construction sector and by Member State
In the euro area in August 2023, compared with August 2022, building construction decreased by 0.6%, while civil engineering increased by 2.6%.
In the EU civil engineering increased by 3.8%, while building construction decreased by 0.6%.
Among Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in production in construction were observed in Romania (+19.3%), Slovenia (+19.0%) and Spain (+6.9%). The largest decreases were recorded in Belgium (-6.5%), Finland (-5.6%) and Austria (-3.1%).
