The Georgian government has completed the announced amnesty on fines for energy companies, benefiting 157 companies and enabling the continuation of 1,500 MW of projects, while 535 MW of projects will be halted, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on April 8.
In total, fines totaling GEL 1 billion were conditionally waived for projects totaling 1,560 MW. Companies that declined the offer will see their projects stopped, but the remaining capacity will move forward under updated terms.
Kobakhidze emphasized that this measure aims to give the energy sector a new boost in Georgia. Companies that fail to meet new obligations risk reinstatement of previously waived fines.
The government had previously ordered the Ministry of Economy to review all companies with fines for breaches of technical, economic, or operational obligations. If companies fail to update guarantees or contracts, the ministry can unilaterally terminate agreements and recover fines.
Details on the specific companies benefiting from the amnesty and those whose projects were halted remain undisclosed.
