Psychotropic prescriptions often issued without patient consultation – Health Ministry

წამლები

The Professional Development Council of the Ministry of Health discussed the prescription and stricter control of psychotropic medications. An internal review found that prescriptions were frequently issued without patient consultation, justification, or proper diagnosis. In some cases, doses were two to three times higher than recommended, and some doctors did not have the required authorization.

Council members emphasized that, alongside the state, doctors’ professional responsibility is crucial in addressing this harmful practice.

According to Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze, the identified cases violate legal norms and will receive appropriate responses. Amendments to regulatory acts are planned to minimize the risks of improper medication distribution. Specific cases will be referred to investigative authorities, while the Council will continue discussions on doctors’ professional accountability.

The Professional Development Council includes representatives from the Ministry of Health, medical institutions, sectoral associations, and the Parliamentary Committee on Health and Social Affairs. Decisions are made by majority vote.
