The Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection reports, that Georgian Qvevri (Qvevri) was granted the status of a protected geographical indication. According to the Ministry, Qvevri is the first non-food product to be added to the State Register of Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications.
Mindia Davitadze, Chairman of National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia handed over the certificate of geographical indication of the Qvevri to Levan Davitashvili, the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture.
"Georgian Qvevri wine is becoming more and more popular both in Georgia and on the international market as well. So, the Qvevri, as a product needs more attention. UNESCO recognition has given us more responsibility. The state has done a lot to promote Qvevri wine. The Ministry has worked and created a Qvevri standard that takes into account its historical memory and heritage. We have worked closely with Sakpatenti and Qvevri is the first non-food product in Georgia to have the status of a geographical indication. This will further promote Georgian Qvevri wine, both inside and outside the country,” Levan Davitashvili said.
Georgian traditional Qvevri wine was awarded the status of a UNESCO (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.
Qvevri wine is produced by almost all Georgian wine companies today, its share in exports is growing from year to year. At this stage, individual winemakers produce wine in Georgian Qvevri in Italy, USA, France, Spain, Japan, Slovenia and other countries.
