The rehabilitation of a key 16-kilometer road connecting Upper and Lower Svaneti has been completed, according to the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Infrastructure of Georgia. The project covered two sections of the Zugdidi–Jvari–Mestia–Lasdili highway, km178 to km185 and km186 to km192, significantly improving transport conditions in one of Georgia’s most important mountainous regions.
The works included the installation of a new cement-concrete road surface, upgraded safety infrastructure, and the arrangement of an access road to the church located on the Zagaro Pass. This point is where the Zugdidi–Jvari–Mestia–Lasdili road connects with the Kutaisi–Tskaltubo–Tsageri–Lentekhi–Lasdili route, forming the shortest link between Racha-Lechkhumi, Lower Svaneti, and Upper Svaneti. The improved connection is expected to substantially reduce travel time across the regions.
Officials say the upgraded road will benefit both residents and visitors by enhancing mobility, supporting local businesses, and strengthening tourism and resort development in the highland areas. The improved access is also expected to stimulate broader economic activity across the connected municipalities.
The project, financed entirely by the state budget, cost a total of GEL 27.9 million, marking a major infrastructure investment aimed at boosting regional development and connectivity.
