The Tbilisi Transport and Urban Development Agency has announced that the roadway dimensions on Rustaveli Avenue will remain unchanged and the street will not be narrowed during the planned rehabilitation. Agency head Nino Bagashvili said the full closure of the avenue to vehicle traffic was decided to speed up the renovation process.

Bagashvili explained that the street design was developed over several years with the involvement of European traffic planning experts. The main goals are to make the avenue more pedestrian-friendly, improve public transport movement, and maintain convenient access for drivers.

She noted that about 30% of vehicles previously used Rustaveli Avenue mainly for turning around. The new plan will introduce traffic junctions at key streets, additional traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and renovated underground passages. The pedestrian areas and car lanes will not be reduced, while new drop-off zones will be added where possible.

During the works, drivers will be able to use alternative routes through Mtatsminda streets, Tabukashvili Street, and the right bank of the Mtkvari River. Some streets will become two-way, while parking restrictions will be introduced in areas such as Griboedov Street to improve traffic flow.
