Sanctions Do Not Prevent Me from Serving as Auditor General - Gabitashvili

გიორგი გაბიტაშვილი

Georgi Gabitashvili, Georgia’s Auditor General, says that international sanctions imposed on him are a political decision and do not affect his ability to hold office. He made the statement during a session of the Parliamentary Finance and Budget Committee in response to questions from an opposition lawmaker.

MP Tata Khvedeliani of the “Gakharia for Georgia” party questioned his suitability for the post, noting that Gabitashvili has been sanctioned by the United Kingdom and Estonia over alleged inaction during his tenure as Deputy Prosecutor General. She argued that such assessments raise concerns about institutional trust in financial oversight.

In response, Gabitashvili rejected the criticism, stating that sanctions carry no legal force and are not based on judicial findings. He added that his appointment by Parliament demonstrates institutional confidence in both him and the State Audit Office he leads, noting that he was already under sanctions at the time of his confirmation.

Gabitashvili previously made similar remarks after his appointment in June 2025, saying he felt no discomfort regarding the sanctions. He replaced Tsotne Kavlashvili as Auditor General in 2024, having previously served for years as Deputy Prosecutor General. Western countries have sanctioned several Georgian officials over alleged human rights violations and democratic backsliding.
