According to his latest asset declaration, Giorgi Gabitashvili—the former Prosecutor General and current Auditor General sanctioned by the United Kingdom—continues to hold large sums of cash, while fully settling his loan at Bank of Georgia a month and a half after being sanctioned, paying half of it in cash.
The United Kingdom imposed financial and visa sanctions on Giorgi Gabitashvili on April 10, 2025. The UK government explained that the sanctions were imposed "under the UK's Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations 2020" over serious human rights violations in response to legitimate protests that began in 2024.
On May 21, 2025—a month and a half after being sanctioned—Gabitashvili fully repaid the remaining 102,482 GEL balance on a 120,480 GEL loan taken from Bank of Georgia in 2022 for a 10-year term. According to the declaration, the payment was made using funds from a bank account (51,113 GEL) and in cash (51,369 GEL).
Although the law requires public officials to report bank accounts (even those with a zero balance), no bank accounts are listed in Giorgi Gabitashvili's name in the declaration. The document lists only accounts belonging to his wife and mother.
Alongside the absence of bank accounts, the Auditor General indicates holding the cash equivalent of over half a million GEL:
350,000 GEL — listed as savings;
$62,000 USD (162,322 GEL at the National Bank exchange rate on August 12) — listed as proceeds from the sale of real estate (in the previous year's declaration, the amount held in USD stood at $290,000 USD);
His wife, Magda Machaidze, holds $5,000 USD in cash (approximately 13,091 GEL), also received from the sale of real estate.
According to the declaration, during 2025, Gabitashvili's income in the post of Auditor General (from June 11 to December 31) totaled 75,415 GEL. Prior to that, from January 1 to June 11, 2025, while serving as Prosecutor General, he received 57,564 GEL in remuneration.
In 2025, Gabitashvili acquired:
A 203.2 sq.m apartment in Tbilisi, on Nino Ramishvili 2nd Lane — for $182,880 USD (on September 23, 2025);
2 garages at the same address (15.4 sq.m and 16.3 sq.m) — for $7,500 USD each.
On May 20, 2025, his wife, Magda Machaidze, purchased a Lexus NX 350 automobile for $30,000 USD (she also owns a Lexus NX 300 purchased in 2022 for $19,813 USD).
In 2025, Magda Machaidze worked at JSC "Georgian State Electrosystem" as Deputy Director for Administrative Affairs (previously serving as Advisor to the Director) and received 72,086 GEL in salary. Gabitashvili's mother, Medea Lomidze, earned 20,042 GEL as a specialist at the National Statistics Office.
Giorgi Gabitashvili was confirmed by Parliament as Georgia's Auditor General in 2025. He replaced Tsotne Kavlashvili, who became the 6th Deputy Minister of Finance. Gabitashvili had previously served for years as Deputy Prosecutor General. Western nations have sanctioned high-ranking Georgian officials, including law enforcement agency representatives, for human rights violations and failing to address the regression of democratic processes in the country.
