The President of Armenia’s National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, commented on the country's decision to participate in the informal CIS summit and the upcoming BRICS summit. Simonyan emphasized the importance of these formats for Armenia.
"We cannot reject the CIS format, whose key document, the Alma-Ata Declaration, forms the basis of our negotiations with Azerbaijan. This is also crucial from a security standpoint," Simonyan stated.
Speaking about Armenia's involvement in the upcoming BRICS summit, the speaker noted that the country has important economic ties with some members of the organization. "In the current situation, where various sanctions are in place and countries are seeking new channels for economic flows, Armenia must participate based on its own interests," he stressed.
Simonyan disagreed with the opinion that these actions indicate Armenia is abandoning its path toward closer ties with the EU. "Our value system and logic have not changed in any way. This will be a course aligned with Armenia’s economy, rights, and value system. And this course continues," he added.
The speaker emphasized that Armenia should not isolate itself from the region, noting that the authorities and the people of Armenia are united in this perspective.
Earlier, BMG reported that Armenia is preparing to participate in two significant international events in 2024: the BRICS summit and the informal CIS summit.
