Tbilisi City Hall says the decision to fully restrict vehicle traffic on Rustaveli Avenue during rehabilitation works was made to ensure the project is completed as quickly as possible. Officials said carrying out the works in stages while maintaining partial traffic flow would have significantly extended the construction period.
According to the municipality, the rehabilitation project is one of the largest and most complex infrastructure works carried out on the avenue. The full closure allows construction teams to operate continuously and avoid delays caused by ongoing traffic movement through the work zone.
The city government said the temporary traffic restrictions are necessary to maintain the planned schedule and complete the rehabilitation within the expected timeframe. The works, which began on July 23, are expected to continue for around four months, affecting Rustaveli Avenue and part of Merab Kostava Street.
The rehabilitation project has a total contract value of around GEL 19.8 million and was awarded to Smart Solutions LLC, the only bidder in the tender process. The project is divided into three sections, covering the area from Chovelidze Street to Freedom Square, with works including infrastructure upgrades along the central avenue.
