The head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Armen Kazaryan presented statistics on individuals seeking asylum in Armenia at the National Assembly session on April 2nd.
According to the presented data, in 2020, the number of people seeking asylum was 206. In 2021, this number increased to 260. In 2022, there was a sharp jump - 968 people, primarily due to the military actions in Ukraine, he noted.
This trend continued in 2023, with 817 individuals seeking asylum, said Armen Kazaryan.
Kazaryan emphasized that traditionally, countries in the Middle East such as Syria, Iraq, and Egypt were at the top of the list of origin countries for asylum seekers in Armenia.
"However, in 2022, due to the Russo-Ukrainian war, the situation changed. Ukraine took the first place, followed by Middle Eastern countries - Syria and Iraq," said Armen Kazaryan.
